Parenthood adds many things to your life ~ some wonderful (the lovey stuff), some not so much (the gooey dirty gross stuff). One of the things is new words that you never thought you'd use. I admit to uttering the most cliche phrase in the English language: "Don't run with those scissors." But I'm telling you the truth ~ if your kid is running with a sharp object in their hand, there is no way on Earth that you can't say something. Sometimes there isn't a word that exists for what you are trying to say ~ then you invent words. Here are a couple that our family have come up with.
I am still nursing my 20 month old baby, and she is quite the talker. Sometimes she asks for "booby" (I know, I know, you're supposed to teach your kids the correct terms ~ but I didn't. I just don't see the harm, and I think "breast" would be really hard for her to say. I do admit that it was embarrassing the other day when I showed up a bit early to pick up my son from school, and the teacher invited Chloe and I to come in ~ Chloe was tired and as soon as I sat down on a chair and pulled her into my lap she started yelling "booby, booby!" and trying to get into position!) and sometimes she asks for "nap". (Whew, run on sentence there, English teacher) Anyway, recently, to save time (she's a busy toddler) she has combined the two. Now she will ask for a "boobynap". Charming! I'm glad she wasn't saying that the day I picked Brodie up early!
You know when kids are getting over a cold, and they have those dried out boogers that disappear and reappear with every breath? Around here, we call 'em "peek-a-boogers". Nice, eh? (My husband pointed out that we didn't actually coin this term. I wish I could give credit where credit is due, but I don't remember the person's name. She was the mom of one of the kids at Brodie's first daycare ~ thats the best I can do!)
And then there's when they are mid-cold and have a gigantic sneeze and a huge amount of... well, you know (usually bright green) comes out. Well, thats a "snotterfall". I DID come up with that one. I think a mention in Oxford's Unabridged Dictionary of the English Language would be appropriate.
For some reason when I started this post, I thought I had more of them, but that actually seems to be all I can remember for now. If I remember more, I will post.
I haven't mentioned my weight loss goal lately.Thats because I stepped on the scale the other night to get a "baseline" and was pretty discouraged. It's actually about 15 pounds I need to lose. (I know I'm Canadian and I should be using kilos, but I just can't think in them. I am old enough that I was in grade 4 or 5 when we switched, and I guess my formative measurement learning years occurred before then, because I still get confused by meters, kilos, etc.)
Anyhoo- confession time. I weigh (gulp) 154.5 pounds. I'd like to weigh 140. I was 135 when I got pregnant with Brodie nine years ago, so I think thats reasonable. The calorie counter thingy I joined isn't actually working out that well. It took a long time to find the foods. I do think I need to keep track though, so I will have to figure something out. Otherwise its just too easy to go overboard.
I did go snowboarding today! It was great even though we only did two runs and it was HOWLING with wind and snowing. I just love it! Only eight more times to go, and I will have reached my goal of 10 for the season. It looks like we are going tomorrow too. It was raining like crazy here earlier, so presumably it was snowing on the mountain, so it should be good!
Well, I think I see a snotterfall, and Chloe wants a boobynap, so I guess thats all for now!
